Houston signs top center prospect Arafan Diane for 2026 class.

Highly touted senior Arafan Diane, recognized as one of the most physically dominant players at the high school level, declared his intention to join the Houston program on Wednesday.

Before choosing Houston, Diane had narrowed down his options to a final five, which included Indiana, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Virginia. The 7-foot center embarked on official visits to all five schools, with Houston being the last stop in late October under the guidance of head coach Kelvin Sampson.

"Coach Sampson has a unique approach," Diane remarked. "He challenges you while showing genuine care, emphasizing strong family values off the court. His defensive coaching prowess is unmatched nationally. We both share a deep desire for success."

Despite strong competition from Indiana during the decision-making process, the Cougars managed to secure Diane's commitment, a result of their sustained effort in recruitment.

"The coaching staff's dedication was remarkable," Diane acknowledged. "Coach Sampson maintained regular communication, even touching base after games. Their frequent visits to my school made a significant impact. Additionally, the incredible fan support and top-notch facilities left a lasting impression."

Hailing from Iowa United Prep (Iowa), Diane ranks as the second-best center in the 2026 class and holds the 21st spot in the SC Next 100 rankings. His dominant performances on the Adidas 3SSB circuit last spring and summer saw him lead in rebounds with an average of 10.8 per game, accompanied by 18.6 points and 1.5 blocks while boasting an impressive field goal percentage of over 74%.

His standout display at the 3SSB Palmetto Road Championships in July further solidified his reputation, where he averaged 21.6 points, 13.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.8 blocks across five games.

Diane's physical presence is unrivaled in high school basketball, and remains scarce even at the collegiate level. Standing tall at 7 feet 1 inch with a wingspan of 7 feet 4 inches and weighing 290 pounds, he epitomizes the quintessential center. Diane excels in utilizing his strengths, excelling in post play, converting alley-oops with emphatic slams, and crashing the boards for crucial second-chance points. His adept screening provides valuable support for both on and off-ball teammates. Furthermore, his reliable hands enable seamless finishes in screen-and-roll situations, complemented by a versatile offensive skill set encompassing inside scoring, occasional perimeter shooting, and a formidable defensive presence.

While Diane marks Houston's initial commitment for the 2026 class, he represents Sampson's fourth top-25 recruit within the last two classes following Houston's impressive recruitment class ranking second in 2025. The Cougars also find themselves in a promising position in the recruitment of SC Next 100 guard Ikenna Alozie, who may announce his commitment imminently.
